The Mixterverse is the collective name for the creative communities centered around ccmixter.org and mixter.plus. Together, these platforms represent over 20 years of collaborative, open-licensed creative work.
Origins at Creative Commons
ccMixter was originally created as a project of the Creative Commons organization. It launched as a platform for musicians to share, remix, and collaborate on music under Creative Commons licenses. The site quickly became one of the most vibrant examples of what open licensing could enable for creative communities.
The Wired Magazine Remix Contest
One of the pivotal early moments was the Wired Magazine Remix Contest, which brought mainstream attention to ccMixter and the concept of legal, open remixing. This event demonstrated the power of CC-licensed music to a wide audience.
Artistech Media Transition
Operations were later transitioned from Creative Commons to Artistech Media, which took over stewardship of the community. This transition allowed the platform to continue operating independently while maintaining its commitment to open licensing.
Strike the Root
The Strike the Root event, featuring Lawrence Lessig, was another landmark moment that helped shape the philosophical underpinnings of the community.
mixter.plus Launch (2023)
In 2023, mixter.plus launched as a companion platform, expanding beyond audio to include images, text, and video. While ccmixter.org remains the large, established audio library, mixter.plus represents the evolution of the Mixterverse into a truly multimedia creative commons.
Community-Driven Operations
Both platforms are run almost entirely by volunteers. Revenue comes from:
- Royalties from monetized video use
- Sales of licenses for commercial use (mostly under "ccPlus" terms)
- Donations and Patreon subscriptions
Monthly operational costs run approximately $1,200/month.
The Mixterverse Today
The Mixterverse continues to grow as a community of artists, remixers, and creators who believe in the power of open collaboration. This wiki exists to document that history and the people who make it happen.
